My final four posters, after I rejected my original idea I decided to have a ‘What, who, where and why?’ campaign which ties in with my second campaign: a booklet containing information and contact information on shelter, what they do and how they could help you. Inside this booklet is a buildable and designable moneybox so the whole family can get involved in giving to the charity, this could be handed in at local Shelter stores. The final posters contain posterized identity-less images that tie in with the question. and feature an information banner at the bottom on how to contact Shelter for more information.

Draft advertising slogans and layouts for my Shelter campaign My original idea was to keep the advert simple as adverts of this type only have a few seconds at most to get the message across. I have decided therfore to just have the question ‘would you live here?’ and an arrow pointing down to the groundrefering to the bus shelter when displayed in an add shell. Inspired by the 3m advert by using its location as an advantage and other charity adverts using guilt as an advertising tool. In my last poster i have added the company logo to see what it would look like. Despite my best efforts I fear that the question appears to refer to the town or area rather than the bus shelter, so I plan to move onto another idea for my campaign.

Advert research. The first image is a 3m safety glass advert, $500 of real money was placed on top of fake money between 2 sheets of 3m safety glass, a security guard watched the money and people were told they could attempt to break the glass using only their feet. A very interesting and clever advert but costly to implement. The second image is a black and white Oxfam advert featuring items in the form of a computer mouse alongside the factual information of how oxfam have a variety of items for sale on their website including things you would not expect. The advert also like many charity adverts has an information banner across the bottom, this is something I would like to apply to my final adverts.

Our new jroject is to create a poster campaign for the charity, Shelter. The first image is the Shelter shop in the town of Worcester, which is much like the Oxfam shops where unwanted clothes and items are given away and resold. The second image is a previous Shelter advert by Lindsay Boyd expressing that they dont just help the homeless but they provide information on a variety of housing problems.

Letterpress continued. Inspired by the work of futurist painter Fortunato Depero, I have made these three pieces. By building layers and altering the angle of the letters I have tried to turn the text into an image, The futurists also applied this technique to their work to express their philosophical views. The theme of my project thus far has been Poole’s hidden beauty and I think the quote by Ninon de L’Enclos fits what I am trying to say about the dirt in Poole and how even though its not wanted it can be pleasant to look at. The third piece was an experiment to how various colours would work as a background and how they work together.

Type and tape. Using various tape our group created two examples of type with tape, the first inspired by the stone paving reminded us of tetris blocks, so using coloured tape we made our own tetris font. The second inspired by painted road signs and lines, we created a perspective piece that reads the word ‘up’ when viewed at the right angle. Ironically the viewer has to look down to see it which adds a nice twist.

These images are from our introduction to letterpress. Experimenting with different numbers, fonts and sizes of sorts I have produced two phrases: ‘hidden beauty’ and ‘concealed and captivating’ relating to the theme of Poole’s hidden beauty. I think they both turned out really well on thick and thin paper. I would like to experiment more with type positioning, larger sorts, coloured type and paper. The last image is a combination of the letterpress work and an image I took in Poole of rust on a wall. Using photoshop I have adjusted the lighting and contrast and added a few touches of colour to the text. I’m now looking to build on this idea and hopefully incorporate more elements into my pieces.

These are some recreations of some images I took in Poole using a variety of techniques and inks. Mixing inks together to make dark green and yellow colours I have attempted to draw how moss had gathered on a white wall, I then in later works applied Jesso to create a mouldy look on the white wall and wax resist to capture the speckled effect on the higher parts of the wall. In the last two pieces I combined all of this with some acrylic paints to greater enhance the image. Adding bleach to black ink I tried to recreate the rusty patterns left on the walls from bolts, I did try to recreate this with acrylic paints in one of the images but i felt the colour saturation was too great. I would like to use a mixture of bleaching ink and acrylics to see if that would provide a better interpretation.

A collection of rubbings and sketches taken on an observational drawing exercise to the town of Poole. The feathers and fish were taken from a war memorial commemorating the soldiers that died in the Normandy landings and the sketches are of one of many side streets in Poole and a ventilation panel that was oozing yellow foam.
